What to do and see in Tuscany during Easter

The explosion of the cart in Florence
In Florence, on Easter, it occurs a very curious old tradition: since the time of the first Crusaders’ cross, on Easter morning, a barrow drawn by white oxen, accompanied by a procession of men and women wearing traditional dresses, make a long path on the main Florence’s streets down to the Duomo Square, where finally you may attend to a very colourful ceremony that is part of the Holy Mass, which end with the barrow’s explosion. Feast of sweet flour in Piteglio
On Easter Monday, in Piteglio (Pistoia province), it takes place the distribution of food all made with chestnut flour: polenta-cake, chestnut-cake, “necci”-cake, pancakes. Of course the whole is accompanied by a dance party in the square, where you can also attend the extraordinary opening of the bell tower.

Easter breakfast in Chianciano Terme
On Easter Sunday, in Chianciano Terme is prepared the traditional Easter breakfast, where thirty groceries, butcheries and bakeries will endeavour to deploy citizenship and tourists the “Ciaccia”, a mixture of pecorino-cheese and sausages (pork), combined with hard-boiled eggs. This is a ritual greeting for the new season, which is leaning.
Feast of cedars and barrels in Bibbona
In Bibbona, near Livorno, on Easter Monday takes place the feast of cedars or “mezzandì feast”. The Feast of the Cedars is also called the “Feast of Engagements”: to show his love publicly, at noon the man present a cedar to the girl he loves. Today the feast is enriched by many stalls selling cedars and many local products and handicrafts, food, all surrounded also by musical concerts, parades and other happenings. At 9pm, the Palio delle Botti begins: young people challenge each others to pushing barrels up the hill of the village, accompanied by the screams of local supporters. The team who first manages to roll the heavy barrel to the finish is the winning team.
